Alfred Erik Leslie Satie (Honfleur, 17 May 1866 - Paris, 1 July 1925) was a French composer and pianist. In addition to his body of music, Satie also left a remarkable set of writings, having contributed work for a range of publications. Satie was a colourful figure in the early 20th century Parisian avant-garde. He was a precursor to later artistic movements such as minimalism, repetitive music and the Theatre of the Absurd. Trois Gnossiennes (first published 1893) These Three Gnossiennes were composed around 1890. The piano solo version of the first three Gnossiennes are without time signatures or bar lines, which is known as "absolute time." Also with respect to the tempo these Gnossiennes follow the Gymnopedies line: slow tempos, respectively "Lent" (French for Lento), "avec etonnement" ("astonished"), and again "Lent".
