Flute quartets are closely related to string quartets with a flute in place of the first violin, and at times rivaled the popularity of the string quartet. It is generally believed that this form reached its pinnacle around 1750. The Flute Quartet No. 1 in D major, K. 285 is the first of three quartets composed for the amateur Ferdinand De Jean. This arrangement for four guitars closely follows the original with minor adjustments made to accommodate the smaller range of the guitar.
