Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
(Guitar Quartet)

Audio Sample

The mood of this hauntingly beautiful French carol is established with a simple ostinato at the introduction. This is quickly joined by a statement of the melody containing both unison and harmony parts. In the second occurrence of the tune, a tonal cluster provides the backdrop for the melody that is sounded solely by guitar 4 in the bass register. The final section, performed in a new key, employs a pulsing rhythmic figure combined with an accompaniment that alternates between harmonic tension and resolution resulting in a new momentum and an escalating intensity that ultimately gives way to a calming, almost soothing conclusion.
